“Analgesia” - PIG

"

The area dividing the brain and the soul Is affected in many ways by experience — Some lose all mind and become soul: insane. Some lose all soul and become mind: intellectual. Some lose both and become: accepted.

“Swing the Heartache” - Bauhaus

So…Marilyn Manson’s new music video.

I just finished it and the music was, surprisingly, a little better than expected. His vocals no longer sound over processed to all hell and he’s beginning to scream properly again, much like in his prime- although not quite as good, but still heaps better. The actual music video was…I don’t know. I liked the little monologue segments scattered throughout, but the actual content didn’t feel like it had much of an overall meaning; just one ~*SHOCKGASPOMGDISTURBING*~ scene after another. I don’t mind disturbing content at all, but I do mind when there doesn’t seem to be a point to it all. Shaking people up to get a message across is great (using Gottfried Helnwein and his grotesque portraits of children for an example), but Manson’s approach to this video comes off as juvenile in the end, almost as if he sat around in his studio wondering how much unsettling shit he could cram into a six minute long video clip and get away with. And knowing him, he’ll most likely prance in front of a camera later and try to explain his ‘ingenious reasoning’ for this crap. Ugh.

tl;dr

The music: Okay. Not as good as I wish it would be, but it didn’t give me a migraine nor made me feel guilty for listening to it for once. Good job.

The video: The mini monologues, nice. Keep those. Everything else: you’re trying too hard. It’s not ‘artsy’ or ‘statement-making’ in any way, just dumb as hell. Sit down and stop shoving glass eyes up women’s vaginas.
